Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is designed to help all pupils develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics. Through regular practice and exposure to increasingly complex problems, pupils will build the ability to recall and apply mathematical knowledge accurately and confidently as they progress through their learning journey. This includes developing a level of automaticity that allows them to tackle problems efficiently without becoming overwhelmed by basic procedures.

We aim to nurture reasoning skills, encouraging pupils to explore mathematical relationships and patterns. By engaging with conjectures and justifying their thinking, learners will develop the ability to present their ideas logically and clearly, using precise mathematical language to explain their reasoning.

Through our curriculum, pupils will learn to solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding in a variety of contexts. They will learn how to break down complex challenges into manageable steps, building resilience and perseverance in their approach to finding solutions to both familiar and unfamiliar problems.

Curriculum Overview

At Matthew Moss High School, our mathematics curriculum is a vital part of the CHANGE curriculum, supporting the development of numeracy, literacy, resilience and independent thinking. We believe that every learner can achieve highly in mathematics and that strong mathematical skills are essential for future success, both academically and in the world of work.

Our mathematics curriculum is inclusive, ambitious and rooted in sound pedagogy. Students develop strong portable knowledge through varied and frequent practice, enabling them to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and to recall and apply knowledge accurately over time. Learners are encouraged to use the correct mathematical language to explain their thinking clearly and precisely.

The curriculum builds on prior knowledge year on year, exposing learners to increasingly complex mathematical ideas as they progress through school. Real-world applications are embedded throughout, igniting curiosity and showing how mathematics connects to everyday life and future employment, particularly within STEM fields. Historical and cultural aspects of mathematics are explored to broaden learners’ perspectives and highlight the subject’s global significance. Underpinned by the science of learning, the curriculum includes SPARX Maths homework, promoting delayed retrieval and continual practice to strengthen long-term retention and understanding.
