Media Studies
Faculty Intent
Curriculum Intent:
At MMHS, Media Studies is a modern and interactive subject, which encourages young people to develop their creative, analytical, and communication skills, by exploring a range of media forms and perspectives. A developed understanding of Media Studies will provide young people with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the modern world, while offering genuinely exciting career prospects.
Media products manipulate their respective audiences, usually with the intention of making the consumer buy into an idea or product. Media learners are given a unique insight into why and how this is done, learning the various methods, devices and conventions employed to engage a chosen audience. MMHS learners are media literate , but are not media savvy. This GCSE allows them to develop an increasingly necessary critical eye for the modern, ever-evolving world of media they are entering.
At MMHS, Media Studies must enable learners to:
- demonstrate skills of enquiry, critical thinking, decision-making and analysis
- acquire knowledge and understanding of a range of important media issues
- develop appreciation and critical understanding of the media and their role both historically and currently in society, culture and politics
- understand and apply specialist subject-specific terminology to analyse and compare media products and the contexts in which they are produced and consumed in order to make informed arguments, reach substantiated judgements and draw conclusions about media issues
- appreciate how theoretical understanding supports practice and practice supports theoretical understanding
- develop practical skills by providing opportunities for creative media production
Learners are assessed in four areas of Media practice:Representation, Audience, Industry and Language (RAIL)
