Matthew Moss Learners Lobby Local MP for Change

Matthew Moss High School’s Year 11 GCSE Citizenship learners took their studies outside the classroom during UK Parliament Week, engaging directly with local Member of Parliament, Elsie Blundell, in a high-impact political lobbying session.

Learners met with the MP to present their findings and exert political pressure on issues they feel are of vital significance. These students have spent time completing extensive primary and secondary research into national and global issues that are important to them and directly link to their GCSE curriculum.

Some of the topics included homelessness, discrimination in Rochdale, how to support refugees, NHS funding and issues in schools such as behaviour.

“Matthew Moss students are clearly highly supported by the staff.”

Elsie Blundell

The session was the culmination of weeks of preparation, challenging the learners to move beyond theoretical knowledge and apply real-world political strategies. Their goal was to lobby the MP directly, seeking to enact change within society and pressure the government into taking action on their chosen topics.

Our learners presented their research with passion and confidence and proudly promoted the values of our school and of the Watergrove Trust; to say we are proud is an understatement.

It was wonderful to speak with Elsie and her colleagues. Our learners and Matthew Moss community benefitted immensely from the visit and we would like to say thank you for taking the time to visit our school and engage with our learners.
