500 Words Competition
On World Book Day, Matthew Moss High School ran a ‘500 words’ competition
The winner was Sanika from year 8 who wrote the outstanding piece below!

Gleaming, the sun lay on the western horizon. Its rays penetrate through the dusky sky. A myriad of colours exploding like a firework, illuminating the evening sky that blanketed the entire island.
The crystal clear water lapped gently – gripping grains of sand with a gurgle. As water met stone, there came a clunk, then swish and a swirl and clop. Sleek and sinuous, the lagoon lay blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple.
Existing side by side, in perfect harmony, the shore was fledged with emerald palm trees. Their imperfect feathers were hundreds of metres in the air, their brown spines patterned with swirls, that looked like an ancient language, snaked downwards, coming into contact with the golden ground.
Subtle, a vision of reds and yellows perched on a tree, on the island that it called home. Eyes glinting in the fading sunlight, like they were hiding some sort of secret, this exuberant creature nibbled on the ripest fruit of them all. The feathered that cocooned this magnificent body, blew outwards, giving the illusion that the animal was rising. About the size of a pigeon, the miniature bird clawed at the already injured branch.
At the heart of this isolated island, the omnipotent mountain was a deterrent to all. Its crumbling rocks disposed of by the vast ocean never to be seen again. A ghostly mist surrounded the mountain entwining into every nook and cranny, leaving no gaps. Protruding, its edge entered the sky. Invisible.
The sanguine sun dissolved into the darkened sky. Meanwhile, there came the glorious voice of a songbird, breaking the silence. A chorus of trilling and warbling followed! Filling the air as the island said goodbye to the sun.
Then, silence came once more as an unspoken rule, while the island drifted into a deep sleep underneath the glowing lantern that hung in the sea of black above.
